The Early Bird — Roots of a Digital Artist
TL;DR: The Quick Canvas
• The Spark: A "Kickstart Your Creativity" prompt from Lisa Bardot of Bardot Brush.
• The Materials: Digital collage elements and textures provided by Lisa specifically for this tutorial.
• The Subject: A whimsical, multi-textured bird—one of my very first digital creations.
• The Evolution: Learning to "layer" curated textures into a cohesive character.
The Spark of Discovery
Every established artist has a "Day One." For me, that day was fueled by a "Kickstart Your Creativity" prompt from Lisa Bardot. Her Bardot Brush tutorials were my gateway into the world of Procreate, and this piece—which I’ve affectionately dubbed The Early Bird—represents my first real flight into digital collage on the iPad.
Texture and Play
In those early stages, I was fascinated by the way the digital canvas could mimic physical layers. Using the curated imagery and textures Lisa provided for this project, I began to test the boundaries of "clipping" textures. If you look at the tail feathers, you can see those early experiments with brick-like patterns and bold, graphic lines. I was learning how to drop digital "scraps" into specific shapes, a technique that has since become a cornerstone of my Art by Donyale Studio style.
Documenting the Provenance
While the palette here is much more primary and vibrant than the sophisticated teals and hot pinks I use today, the "bones" of my artistic voice were already beginning to form. Sharing this work is a vital part of documenting the provenance of my studio. It’s a reminder that art is a practice of constant curiosity. This bird was the vibrant ancestor to the layered, vintage-inspired roses and collages I create now.
