Beyond the Blueprint: How a Tutorial Became My 'Home'

Every artist starts with a foundation. For this series, my foundation was a digital collage tutorial from the Pink Lemonade Company. I spent hours on my iPad learning the structural "math" of the piece—how to layer weathered textures on a tiny door and how to align the vintage-style stripes of a cottage facade.

But as a former CPA, I know that a ledger isn't balanced until every entry is accounted for. Looking at the house standing alone on its textured background, the "audit" of the image felt incomplete. It was a beautiful house, but it wasn't yet a home.

To make it mine, I had to step away from the instructions and follow my intuition. I searched for a typeface that carried a sense of whimsy to float the words "Home Sweet Home" above the roofline. I took my textured brushes to the canvas to grow a bed of grass and added delicate floral details to soften the edges.

In that moment—when the rigid layers of the tutorial met the organic flow of my own hand—the image finally felt reconciled. It was the moment I stopped following a map and started building my own world.
